Late Bishop of Jaffna remembered in Trincomalee

The late Bishop of Jaffna, Rt. Rev. V.Deogupillai, firmly stood against injustice, suppression of human rights and fought for the equality of all irrespective of any differences, said Justice C.V.Vigneswaran, in his speech read out at the commemoration meeting for the late Bishop held at
St.Mary's College in Trincomalee Sunday evening.
Mr.K.Sivapalan, Attorney-at-Law, who organized this event, presided. The chief guest of the event, Supreme Court Judge Mr.Vigneswaran, did not attend the meeting because he was indisposed. However, his speech was read at the meeting by Attorney-at-Law Mr.R.Thirukumaranathan. Swampillai, Trincomalee parliamentarians, Mr.R.Sampanthan and Mr.K.Thurairetnasingham, also participated at the event, sources said. Mr.Sivapalan made an appeal to Bishop Swampillai to conduct the annual Deogupillai memorial lecture. Justice Vigneswaran said the late Bishop Deogupillai was a beacon to Tamils at a time when Tamils lost their leadership and were subjected to suppression of fundamental rights. “Justice and truth guided him in his mission. He wanted to live as a Tamil. Tamils should remember his services forever," he said. Mr.T.P.Subramaniam and Mr.T.N.Thavapalan spoke. Attorney-at-Law Mr.P.K.Antony proposed the vote of thanks.
