Workshop on pre-school education held in Trincomalee

One-day workshop on curriculum formulation for training pre-school development co-ordinators in the northeast province was held Friday at the North East Provincial Guest House in Trincomalee, sources said. The workshop was organized by the Tamil Rehabilitation Organization (TRO) and the Provincial Education Ministry Secretary Mr.R.Thiagalingam inaugurated the workshop.

This workshop was conducted by the Pre School development Centre in
Killinochchi with the financial assistance of an international
non-governmental organization FORUT and Tamil Rehabilitation Organization,
TRO sources said. Provincial Education Ministry Secretary Mr.Thiagalingam said powers to
administer pre-schools have not been devolved to provincial councils.
However North East Provincial Education Ministry has appointed assistant
directors of education to supervise pre-schools in the province, he said. Pre-school education plays a vital role in the development of a child, said

UNICEF in the year 2001 spent ten million rupees for the pre-school
development in the Vanni region. The TRO is now negotiating with the
UNICEF to launch a project to develop pre-schools in the entire northeast
province this year, Mr. Lawrence Christy said. FORUT Programme manager Mr. Simon Weatherbed and Ms Jeya Thambiah also spoke. Assistant Directors who are in charge of pre-schools and primary schools in
the respective education zones in Trincomalee, Batticaloa and Amparai
participated in the workshop.
