The Chavakachcheri Magistrate, Mr.K.Ariyanayagam, Tuesday ordered remand for one of the twelve women soldiers of the Sri Lanka Army who have been charged with the murder of a fellow woman soldier Chandrika while serving in Chavakachcheri in 2001, legal sources said.
Twelve women soldiers were arrested and produced in court in 2001 when the
medical evidence submitted to court revealed the deceased woman soldier
Chandrika had died due to assault and fracture of a rib. Later all the
twelve suspects were released on bail with the army authorities as surety. When the suspects appeared Tuesday in the Chavakachcheri Magistrate’s Court,
the army official who stood surety for the suspects told court that he was
withdrawing his surety on behalf of the suspect J.J.A.Nilmini. The
Magistrate then cancelled the surety bail and ordered remand for the
suspect Nilmini, legal sources said.
