Hartal observed in Trincomalee
[TamilNet, Saturday, 26 July 2003, 12:38 GMT]
A hartal (general shut down) was observed in the town of Trincomalee Saturday and all business establishments owned by Tamil and Muslim people were closed down,
bringing the normal life to a standstill, civil sources said.
The Tamil people of Trincomalee participated in the hartal at the invitation of the
Federation of Tamil Organizations in Trincomalee to condemn the arrest of
LTTE cadres and Tamil public and the increased harassment by the security
forces in the “pretext of maintaining law and order,” organizers said. A few shops belonging to the Sinhalese were seen open near the clock tower in the heart of eastern port town. Bus services were reduced to a minimum because
of fewer commuters, transport sources said. The main areas in the town, Ehambaram Road and Central Road, were seen deserted. Pavement hawkers did not come to the town, civil sources said.
