The Sri Lanka Muslim Congress will meet the President of Sri Lanka, Ms. Chandrika Kumaratunga, to discuss the SLMC’s suggestions to safeguard Muslim interests in the proposed Interim Administration, the SLMC said in a press release Saturday.
“The President and the Prime Minister should come together to solve the political problems in the country. The majority community should apply whatever pressure is needed and create an environment where the two can work together. It is only then that the ethnic problems in the country can be solved,” the SLMC said. The press release said that the SLMC is meeting the President only "in the interests of solving the ethnic problems." Referring to the Interim Administration proposals being discussed by the UNF government and the Liberation Tigers of Tamil Eelam, the SLMC said that the talks with the President would focus on the role of the Muslim community and the solutions to the problems of the community. “The rights of the Muslim community should be safeguarded,” the SLMC said, adding that at the meeting, the party would ask the President to accept its suggestions.
