[TamilNet, Monday, 28 July 2003, 18:19 GMT]
The Liberation Tigers’ political officer for Vavuniya Town was wounded when a grenade was lobbed at the LTTE’s political office in the northern border town Monday night around 11.30 p.m. The Sri Lanka Monitoring Mission, the Sri Lanka army and Police rushed to the spot upon being informed of the grenade attack on the LTTE’s political office in the town.
The unidentified assailants got away from the scene of the attack, Police said. Mr. Kutty, the LTTE’s political officer for Vavuniya town, was standing near the office’s water well when the assailants lobbed the grenade, Police said. The LTTE’s political office in Vavuniya is in Station Road, in the suburb of VairavarPuliyankulam. The SLA, Police and members of the SLMM are discussing the nature of the attack with Mr. Elilan, the head of the LTTE’s political division in Vavuniya, sources close to the Liberation Tigers who visited the scene of the attack late Monday night told TamilNet. There is a political office of the People's Liberation Organization of Tamil Eelam (PLOTE) and a Police checkpoint about 200 meters away from the place of the bomb attack along the same Railway station road. LTTE sources said the attack was the work of elements who wanted to derail the peace process for their political benefits.
