SL Govt. appoints peace committees for Trincomalee, Ampara

Peace Committees appointed according to the instruction by the Sri Lankan President and Defense Minister are to commence their function in the eastern districts of Trincomalee and Amparai with effect from August 1, according to a communiqué by the North East Provincial Governor's Secretariat.

These peace committees will function under the chairmanship of the Provincial Governor, the communiqué issued by the Governor's Secretary, Mr.S. Amirthalingam, further states.

The objective of the peace committee is to safeguard communal harmony, work for the development of national integrity and to take steps to prevent activities that could induce communal feeling, the communiqué further said.

Mr. Amirthalingam has requested people of the Trincomalee and Ampara districts to notify their respective peace committees any activities that could disrupt communal harmony in their areas, the communiqué said

The office of the Trincomalee District Peace Committee will be located at the Provincial Governor's Secretariat at Orr's Hill in Trincomalee and Ampara District Peace Committee office will at the Ampara District Secretariat, the communiqué said.
