Vavuniya judge remands suspect in abduction case

[TamilNet, Wednesday, 30 July 2003, 01:15 GMT]
When one of a group of ten unidentified men in a case involving a recent abduction of a woman presented himself in court through an attorney Tuesday, the Vavuniya District Judge, Mr. M. Ilancheliyan, ordered remand for the suspect and directed the Police to produce the remaining nine suspects and the three trishaws in which they were said to have gone to the house where the woman was abducted.

In this case, a youth named Mr. Satheeskumar appeared in court with an attorney and the abducted woman to say that the concerned woman in the abduction case is more than 18 years old and he merely took her to get married formally through a registrar. However, the Judge said that this was an abduction case and ordered remand until August 8 for Mr. Satheeskumar so that the Police could conduct further investigation of Mr. Satheeskumar. The Judge released the woman.

The group that abducted the woman gathered unlawfully, trespassed into the woman’s house at night, attacked the woman’s mother and disrupted the peace, the Judge said, and added that the police had not completed its investigation into the incident.

The Judge said that the 3 trishaws and the 9 persons who were with Mr. Satheeskumar during the abduction have not been identified yet, and ordered the Police to produce them and the trishaws in court.

The abduction at 10:15 pm on July 14, in a style typical of Tamil Cinema from Tamil Nadu, had caused widespread fear and concern among the Tamil people in Vavuniya, sources said.
