North East hospitals suffer due to doctors' shortage

There is a dearth for medical officers in the government hospitals in the northeast, admitted the Health Minister of Sri Lanka, Mr.P.Dayaratne, while addressing meetings that followed the opening of the renovated Intensive Care Unit of the Batticaloa Teaching Hospital and a district Ayurveda hospital at a cost of seven million rupees at Puthukudiyiruppu in the Batticaloa district Thursday, health sources said.

The Minister said, however, that he would take prompt steps to appoint about one hundred and fifty medical officers to the northeast government hospital to ease the shortage. He would also take steps to rectify the shortcomings prevailing in the NE hospitals, sources said.

Minister Dayaratne further said that all citizens irrespective of racial and religious differences should come forward to support the government’s peace initiative to find a lasting political solution to the national conflict that has ruined the country in all spheres for the last five decades. “Without permanent peace, the country cannot be developed and this should be borne in the minds of the every citizen in the country,” he stressed.
