HRC inquires into new army camp construction in Jaffna

The representatives of the Sri Lanka Human Rights Commission in Jaffna Thursday visited the Potpathi village in Vadamarachchi east, Jaffna district, where the Sri Lanka Army last week commenced the construction of a military camp, sources said.
SLA has temporarily suspended the construction work following
an agitation campaign by the villagers, sources said. The HRC Jaffna representatives during their visit to the village
observed the current ground situation and held discussiona with the SLA
officials there and representatives of the public organizations separately,
sources said. Already, monitors of the Sri Lanka Monitoring Mission in Jaffna visited the village and held discussion with the parties concerned. Meanwhile, according to the villagers of Potpathi, the SLA personnel at the site had stated that they were prepared to abandon the construction of the new camp at the village and return to their base if their superiors ordered so.
