Mr.S.P.Thamilchelvan, the Political Head of the Liberation Tigers of Tamil Eelam, Monday concluded his nine-day visit to the eastern districts of Batticaloa and Trincomalee and returned to the Vanni, sources in the Vanni said.
He arrived at the Kilinochchi central grounds by a special Sri Lanka Air Force helicopter, the sources said. Mr.Thamilchelvan told journalists on his return that he undertook the visit of eastern districts on the instruction of his leader to obtain first hand information about the ground political situation, sources said. Referring to the Kurankupanchan LTTE camp issue, he said there was nothing new to say on this matter. As the LTTE camp in Kurankupanchan had been in existence for
several years, there was no change in the LTTE's stand, he said. The Sri Lanka Monitoring Mission has told Mr.Thamilchelvan that it would meet the Sri Lanka Army high command to inform the LTTE’s stand on this issue, sources said. During his visit to the east, the LTTE political leader gathered the opinion of civil officials and peoples' representatives in the two districts regarding the proposed interim administrative structure for the North East province and the
progress of peace talks, he told mediamen. Mr.Thamilchelvan left Kilinochchi on July 27 by a Sri Lanka Air Force helicopter on his first leg of tour to the Batticaloa district. He stayed there for five days meeting representatives of civil groups and journalists. He conferred with civil administrative officials in Batticaloa and Amparai districts.
