Two Muslim youths shot dead in Trincomalee

Unidentified gunmen shot dead two Muslim youths, Mohamed Riyaz, 27, and Abdul Kuthoos Fareed,35, at Chelvanayakapuram, a suburb in the Uppuveli police division of Trincomalee, about two km north of the eastern port town, Wednesday night around 9 p.m., police sources said.

Sources said that the deceased were residents of Muttur town. They were shot with a T-56 pistol while they were riding a motorbike in the Chelvanayakapuram area, police said.

A Magisterial inquest was held into the deaths. The bodies will be taken to Muttur for burial Thursday, police sources said.

Meanwhile, tension prevails in the Muttur town following the killing of the two youths. More police and army personnel have been deployed to maintain law and order situation there, police said.

Muslim religious leaders have appealed to their communities to maintain peace, sources said.
