Sri Lanka's Minister of Lands, Dr. Rajitha Senaretna, Saturday paid a surprise visit to Jaffna and inspected the development work of the Jaffna Duraiappah Stadium where the National Peace Sports Festival is scheduled to be held, district secretariat sources said.
Earlier it was decided to hold the festival during the middle part of August. However it has been put off without fixing a new date because of the stalled peace talks between the Government of Sri Lanka and the LTTE, sources said Minister Senaretna said after his Jaffna visit that the new date for the National Sports Festival will be fixed depending on the resumption of the stalled peace talks. Probably the national peace sports festival is likely to be held in November this year if the peace talks resumed in September as expected, Minister Senaratne said. The Minister later inspected the high security zone of the Sri Lanka Army in Gurunagar, a fishing suburb in Jaffna town, accompanied by Minister Mr. T.Maheswaran, sources said Minister Senaratne held discussions with the Sri Lanka Army high officials based at the Palaly military air base regarding the question of removing high security zones in the peninsula, sources said.
