Two political activists of the Liberation Tigers of Tamil Eelam, Mr.Kanthasamy Pugalmaran and Mr. Yogarajah Mayavan, were arrested by Sri Lanka Army soldiers at the Muhamalai checkpoint Tuesday afternoon around 2 p.m and later handed over to the Kodikamam police, police said.
The Kodikamam Police produced them before the Chavakachcheri Magistrate, Mr.Annalingam Premashankar, Tuesday evening on a report that according to army soldiers the suspects had been arrested when they were taking arms from Manipay to the Vanni. However, the LTTE members said they were arrested while coming to Jaffna from Killinochchi, police told the court, legal sources said. The Magistrate ordered remand for the LTTE members, legal sources said. The police handed over the cyanide capsules and identity cards of the two LTTE members to the courts, stating these had been removed by the army soldiers using force on the LTTE cadres when they threatened to swallow cyanide capsules if they were arrested, police told the court, the legal sources said. The court directed its registrar to hand over the cyanide capsules and identity cards to the LTTE Jaffna district political office, the sources said.
