A group of Sri Lanka Police personnel from the Point Pedro Police attempted to remove a Sea Tiger (Naval wing of the Liberation Tigers of Tamil Eelam) activist from his house forcibly in Vathiri in the Vadamarachchi division of Jaffna district Wednesday afternoon, and the attempt was thwarted by the LTTE’s political head in Vadamaradchi, civil sources said, adding that tension prevailed in the area.
The Sea Tiger activist had threatened to swallow cyanide capsule if he was
removed by force. At that stage, the political head of the Vadamarachchi
divisional LTTE office rushed to the scene and intervened in the matter.
Thereafter the police personnel left the area without arresting the youth,
sources said. Earlier in the day, a group of police personnel had gone to the house of the
Sea Tiger activist and asked him to come to the Nelliyady police for an inquiry
regarding the theft of a tractor by unidentified persons, but the activist had told them that he was not prepared to come to the police station as he was not involved in the incident, sources said. Thereafter, another group of police personnel had gone in a pickup vehicle to
Vathiri and attempted to forcibly take the Sea Tiger activist with them to the police station, civil sources said.
