University convocations postponed due to strike

As the strike by the non-academic staff of universities in the country entered nineteenth day Friday, the University Grants Commission said all convocations and external examinations have been postponed indefinitely.
Meanwhile, Inter University Trade Union Federation (IUTUF) said Friday that talks with the commissioner of Labour regarding its demands failed. "IUTUF will not call off its strike until all demands are met," said a trade union official. Academic activities of all universities in the country have been completely disrupted due to the strike by the non-academic staff, UGC official admitted. About ten thousand members of the IUTUF are on strike since August 12 putting forward twenty one demands including the removal of salary anomalies based of B.C.Perera Salary Commission report, salary increase and permanency to casual employees, sources said.
