NECORD supported Irrigation project to begin in Amparai

Rehabilitation efforts of the Kanchikudichaaru Irrigation development project under the North East Community Restoration Development (NECORD) plan are expected to start Monday, according to NECORD officials. The Asia Development Bank (ADB) has allocated Rs.30m and World Food Program (WFP) has given Rs.8m for this project.

Officials involved in this irrigation project said that Rs.14m of the allocated funds have already been approved for the scheduled work. The rehabilitation effort is expected to include increasing the height of and strengthening the bunds, repairs to main and secondary irrigation channels, and repairs to sluice gates.

The project initiation ceremony is due to begin at 10'clock Monday.

Batticaloa-Amparai district special commander of Liberation Tigers of Tamil Eelam (LTTE), T.Ramesh, Batticaloa-Amparai Head of Political Section, E. Kausalyan, Tamil National Alliance (TNA) parliamentarian for Amparai district, A.ChandraNehru, LTTE Amparai head of Political section, Bawa, Amparai Head of Tamil Rehabilitation Organization (TRO), Janarthanan, LTTE's Irrigation Engineer, Sutharsan, Assistant Irrigation Commissioner, K.Rajendra, Thirukovil district Irrigation Engineer Vadivel and several members of the public are expected to attend today's ceremony.

Sources close to the project said that when this project is completed more than 2000 acres of land can be reused for paddy cultivation.

Meanwhile, 16th anniversary of 2nd Lt. Malathi, the first LTTE women cadre, and Tamil Eelam Women's Uprising event are to be held in Kilinochchi on the 10 September, sources said.

100 women cadres are expected to travel from Batticaloa to Vanni Monday to make preparations and to take part in these events, according to sources in Batticaloa,
