During the last few days, the Sri Lanka Army has been dropping human waste from the lavatories of its camps in the Batticaloa district in a residential area near Santhiveli, 26 km north of Batticaloa town on the Batticaloa-Valaichenai road, and this has created a serious health hazard, the residents of the area have complained to health officials.
The SLA is dropping the waste in an unoccupied plot of land on the main road, close to several residences, the Murakkodanchenai Ramakrishna Mission School and the Sivan Hindu temple. Bowsers take the waste from the lavatories of SLA’s Santhiveli and Murakkodanchenai camps and drop it in the unoccupied land. There is currently heavy rain in Batticaloa, and the SLA’s action causes noxious odor and severe health hazard to the people, the residents said in their complaints. The residents of the area have urged to the SLA’s higher authorities and Health officials to take action to stop the actions by the SLA and to remove the waste from the said plot of land, sources said.
