NE bags 24 first places in Tamil day competitions

The All Island Tamil day celebrations and distribution of awards to winners of competitions to mark the day would be held Sunday morning at Bambalapitya New Kathiresan Hall in Colombo. Of 47 events in the competitions, first places in 24 events and second places in 07 events have been won by students from schools in the Tamil dominated northeast province, provincial education sources said.

The competitions were held first at school level, then at divisional and district levels, and later extended to the provincial level. Thereafter the island level competitions were held in Colombo with the participation of first 3 winners of the 47 events from all eight provinces in the country. About 1500 students participated in the final competitions at the national level, sources said.

Sri Lanka’s Minister for Human Resources development, Education and Cultural Affairs, Dr.Karunasena Kodituwakku, and School Education Minister, Mr.Suranimala Rajapakse, will participate as the chief guest and the guest of honour respectively.

A special souvenir “ KOORMATHI” in Tamil, which contains articles written by students and educationists, will be released at the celebration.

Ministers Dr. Kodituwakku and Mr. Rajapakse will hand over certificates to the winners.

Ministry Secretary Mr.V.K.Nanayakkara, Additional Secretary Mr. Thillainadarajah, Director of Education (Tamil) Mr. N.Nadarajah and Assistant Director Mr.C.Sivanirthananda have made arrangements to make the celebrations a success, sources said.
