Pongu Thamil to be held at Eastern University

A Pongu Thamil (Tamil upsurge) event jointly organized by the Batticaloa and Amparai districts will be held at the Eastern University on January 21, according to a decision made at a preparatory meeting held at the Batticaloa Government Teachers’ College Monday, sources said.
Mr. S. Arul, the head of the Eastern University Students’ Association, presided over the preparatory meeting. Students and faculty from the University, Teachers’ College and the College of Education, members of the Chamber of Commerce, Teachers’ Union and Principals’ Union participated at the meeting. An executive committee was formed at the meeting to co-ordinate the event. Mr. Rajan Sathyamoorthy, the President of the Batticaloa Chamber of Commerce and the Development Committee, was chosen as the Batticaloa district coordinator for the event.
Mr. S. Sivagnanamoorthy, the head of the Amparai district Alliance of Hindu Temples, will be the coordinator of the event in Amparai. The committee includes Tamil National Alliance MPs Mr. Joseph Pararajasingham, Mr. G. Krishnapillai and Mr. E. Thangavadivel, Mr. Ariyanayagam Chandranehru (Amparai), the Batticaloa Government Agent, Mr. E. Mounagurusamy, The Vice Chancellor of the Esatern University, Prof. M.S. Mookiah, Municipal Commissioner, Mr. N. Navaneethan and Asst. Commissioner of Local government, Mr. M. Thayaparan.
