TELO member remembered

The 12th death anniversary of Daas, a senior member of Tamil Eelam Liberation Organisation (TELO) was held at Nelliyadi Mahaviththyalayam in Vadamaradchi, in the Jaffna peninsula this afternoon.

The highlight of the occasion was a series of cricket and volleyball matches played among 46 local teams, said sources.

The chief guest was Dr. Kathiravelupillai, district Medical officer of Pt. Pedro.

Mr. A. Sivasamy, divisional secretary, Pt. Pedro and Rev. P.J Mather of the Karaveddy Methodist church were also present.

There were about 5000 participating men women and another 2000 spectators at the celebration said sources.

The speeches on the occasions were mostly dealt with role of sports in society and ways by which sports could be encouraged in Jaffna district.

Das was commander of the TELO in Jaffna between 1984 and late 1985. He left the organisation over strong differences with TELO leadership, which was at that based in Madras, in South India.

Das was shot dead on the orders of TELO leadership at the Jaffna Hospital in early 1986.

Some TELO members and other ex-militant groups were confused about today's commemoration, said sources in Jaffna.
