The Sri Lanka Army (SLA) has opened a new access road to seashore enabling the fisher folk of Point Pedro-Thumpalai east area to get to the beach fronts easily. SLA soldiers Monday started removing a portion of the security bund using heavy equipments to open the new access road to sea,
fisheries sources said.
The security bund was constructed in 1996 by the SLA. SLA soldiers were also seen Monday in identifying and removing booby traps and landmines
buried in the area along the newly opened access road, civil sources said. It was decided at a conference held on January 8 at the security forces headquarters in Point Pedro harbour area between the fisheries
representatives and army officials to open a new access road to seashore as was requested earlier. Jaffna district SLA commander Major General Susil
Chandrapala was present at the conference. Later Major General Chandrapala
visited the site accompanied by fisheries department officials and gave
necessary instruction to his officials, fisheries sources said.
