New Maternity ward opens at Nedunkerni Hospital

Medical and Maternity wards of the Nedunkerni Hospital, renovated at a cost of Rs.2m, was ceremonially opened Monday by Secretary of Ministry of Health for NorthEast, Mr.R.M.S.Ratnayake, Health Commissioner for NorthEast, S.Kumaravetpillai and Secretary of Nedunkerni Pradeshya Sabha, K.Iyampillai, sources in Kilinochchi said.

Deputy Provincial Director of Health Services, Arumugam Ketheeswaran, presided the opening ceremony.
The Hospital which was completely destroyed by the 'Jaya Sikurui' offensive by the Sri Lanka Army (SLA) in 1997, opened its Out Patients' Department after the MoU was signed between the Liberation Tigers and the Sri Lanka government in 2002.
The Outpatient's section operated under severe resource restraints. The resources were further stretched when displaced residents of Nedunkerni began resettling, forcing the health authorities to look for ways to improve the service.
The new wards built with financial help from Ministary of Health for NorthEast has enabled the hospital to provide needed health services to the community after 7 years, officials said.
Head of Thileepan Medical Center, Thamilvaanan, Vavuniya district Head of Thamileelam Health Service, Mannivannan, Head of Vavuniya district LTTE Political wing, C.Elilan, Resident Representative of FORUT, Paul Hendrick, Mullaitivu Assistant Commissioner of Health Services, Dr.S.Jeyakularajah, Director in charge of the Nedunkerni Hospital Dr.Vigneswaran and others participated in the opening ceremony.
Mr.R.M.S.Ratnayake, Secretary to the Provincial Health Ministry of the Northeast is opening the new Nedunkery maternity ward.Health officials said that nearly 3700 families from Nedunkerni, especially pregnant monthers, have benefitted from the Nedunkerni Hospital avoiding the need to travel to e Vavnuniya Hospital 50km away or to Puthukudiyiruppu Hospital (30km).
