Protesting parents want school back from military

Parents protested in front of the Thenmaradchi Zonal Education office in Chavakachcheri Thursday urging the authorities to re-open the Eluthumadduval North Government Tamil Mixed School (GTMS), which is occupied by the Sri Lanka army now. The protestors say their children face numerous problems because the school remains closed. Children from five hamlets in Eluthumadduval north were studying in the school before it was occupied by the SLA in 2000.
“We resettled in our villages in October 2002 and have been urging the authorities to reopen the school. Our children have to walk a long distance to the Mirusuvil Roman Catholic Tamil Mixed School where they have been accommodated temporarily”, one of the protesting parents told TamilNet. He said that the school can be reopened without any problem as it lies within 200 meters of the SLA’s forward defence line. The parents submitted a memorandum to the Thenmaradchi Zonal Director of Education, the Sri Lanka Monitoring Mission and Tamil National Alliance MP, Mr. N. Raviraj. The parents said they would block the main road to Jaffna (Kandy Road - A9) if they get no positive response to their memorandum from education officials in Jaffna.
