Teachers proficient in 'Marine Fishery' needed - MP

Tamil National Alliance parliamentarian Mr.K.Thurairetnasingham and North
East Provincial Education Ministry Secretary Mr.R.Thiagalingam Tuesday appealed to the Minister of Human Resources Development and Cultural
Affairs to recruit Tamil medium teachers who are qualified to teach Marine
Resources as a subject in the NorthEast schools, civil society sources said.
Both requested the Minister to amend the gazette notification already issued to recruit one thousand Tamil medium advanced level qualified teachers enabling youths who have passed in Marine Resources as a subject
to apply for the positions, sources said. Mr.Thiagalingam in his letter to the line ministry secretary pointed out that the subject Marine Fisheries is already being taught in coastal area schools in the northeast. Since northeast province has a long coastal belt
running from Mannar, Point Pedro, Mullaitivu, Trincomalee, Batticaloa and Kalmunai, fishing has become a major industry and the number of students offering Marine Fisheries as a subject to the GCE Ordinal Level examination
increase every year. Mr.Thurairetasingham in his letter to the Line Minister said nearly 800 students in the northeast coastal area schools are offering Marine Fisheries as a subject to the forthcoming GCE ordinary level examination. But there is a dearth for qualified teachers to teach MarinesFisheries as
a subject. Hence action should be taken to publish another amendment to the already
issued gazette notification to include Marine Fisheries as also one of the
subjects for the recruitment of GCE (AL) qualified teachers to Tamil medium
schools in the province, appealed Mr.Thurairetasingham and Mr.Thiagalingam
in letters to Colombo Education Ministry, sources said.
