New SLMM head begins Northeast evaluation tour

The Sri Lanka Monitoring Mission head, Major General (retd.) Trond Furuhovde, began his tour of the Northeast province Monday, having assumed office for the second time on February 1st. He arrived in Trincomalee Monday. The aim of his visit is to evaluate the implementation and the functions of the SLMM, sources said.
The SLMM head met the General Officer Commanding of the Sri Lanka Army in Trincomalee district, Major General Sunil Tennekoon, Government Agent Mr. Gamini Rodrigo and the Naval Commander in Trincomalee, SLMM sources said. Later in the afternoon, he met with the Trincomalee district political head of the Liberation Tigers of Tamil Eelam (LTTE) at the SLMM office in Trincomalee and discussed the ground situation, the SLMM sources said. According to the sources, the SLMM head is to visit Batticaloa Tuesday and Amparai on Wednesday. He is also expected to visit the LTTE-held Vanni region once LTTE political head Mr.S.P.Thamilselvan returns from abroad next week, the SLMM sources said.
