Suresh to be released on bail

Mr. Suresh Manikavasagam a Tamil activist who was facing deportation to Sri Lanka from Canada will be released from custody, according to an order enforced by Judge Teitelbaum on Thursday, said legal sources in Canada.
He is expected to be released on bail on Monday. However his release is subject to conditions, they said. Suresh's deportation, scheduled for January 19, was postponed at the eleventh the hour by Ontario Provincial Court following last minute hearing. Canadian Federal Court rejected earlier an appeal filed by Suresh's lawyers against his planned deportation. The court also rejected a request for a stay order. Mr. Suresh was taken into custody in October 1995, pursuant to a security certificate issued against him under the Immigration Act of Canada. The federal court determined in August last year that the issuance of certificate, finding Mr. Suresh to be a person inadmissible to Canada under the Immigration Act, was not unreasonable. Mr. Manickavasagam Suresh, 42, fled Sri Lanka in 1990 and was recognised as a Convention Refugee by the Canadian authorities in 1991.
