Gunmen injure Eastern University Senior Lecturer

Senior Lecturer of Agriculture and Acting Dean of the Agriculture faculty of the Eastern University, Professor T.Thiruchelvam, was shot and injured by two unidentified gunmen at his home in Kallady, Batticaloa Tuesday night at around 8.30 pm, security sources said. He has been admitted to the Batticaloa teaching hospital and receiving treatment, according to hospital sources.

Hospital sources said that Prof.Thiruchelvam received two wounds in his lower stomach area and that the wounds were not life threatening.

Security sources said, two gunmen who came in a motorbike went into Prof.Thiruchelvam's house, shot him with a pistol at close range and escaped.

Prof.Thiruchelvam's house is located at the perimeter of Maariamman Temple in Kallady.

Batticaloa Police are investingating the incident.
