TRO-assisted disabled students achieve academic success

Eyesight-impaired students from Iniya Valvu Illam have shown themselves to be competitive with other students in their schools in the last GCE (OL) exam for which results were released recently. One such student, Mr. Alagu Chandrakumar, received the best results in Vallipunam Junior High School, receiving 3 As, 2 Bs and 4 Cs. Two other students from Iniya Valvu Illam received 1 A, 2 Bs, 5 Cs and 1 S; and 1A, 1 B, 5 Cs and 1 S respectively.

Iniya Valvu Illam is the only institution in Vanni for disabled children and functions with the financial assistance of Tamils Rehabilitation Organisation (TRO), with particular support from the Swiss and German TRO offices, and other charity organizations. Iniya Valvu Illam provides care and education to 38 vision-impaired, 36 hearing-impaired and 2 physically handicapped children. It is situated at Vallipunam, Puthukudiyiruppu in the Mullaithivu district.

IN 2003, 4 vision-impaired students from Iniya Valvu Illam passed the GCE (AL) exams and have been accepted into Jaffna University where they will soon begin classes.
