SLN bans transport of camera equipment to Jaffna islets

[TamilNet, Tuesday, 04 May 2004, 15:30 GMT]
The Sri Lanka Navy (SLN) has totally banned the transport of video cameras and other photographic equipment to the islets in the Jaffna peninsula from the Jaffna mainland. This ban has come into effect from Monday as a "security measure," SLN sources said.

Earlier, the SLN allowed the residents of the islets to take video and other cameras and photographic equipment to their residences to record wedding and other social events with written permission. The SLN authorities have now ordered complete ban on the transportation of such equipment to the islets from the mainland, residents complained

There are no photographic studios in the islets for the residents to hire to record wedding and other social events in their villages. Till Friday, residents of the islets were allowed to make application to the SLN authorities stationed in their villages to hire photographers from the mainland.

The SLN on Monday has told the villagers not to make applications to obtain permission to hire video cameras and other photographic equipment from Jaffna mainland as the transportation of such items to the islets has been completely banned, residents said.
