The Marxist and Sinhala nationalist Janatha Vimukthi Peramuna (JVP)
Wednesday warned that it would launch a street revolution with the backing
of masses if the main opposition United National Front (UNF) attempted to
defeat the progressive policies of the United Peoples Freedom Alliance
government in the parliament.
The JVP is one of the main constituents of the UPFA, which was voted to power with 105 seats, eight short of the absolute majority, in the April 2 parliamentary polls, and commands 40 seats in the UPFA. The general secretary of the JVP, Mr.Tilvin Silva, addressing a meeting in Maharagama in the Colombo district Tuesday night said the masses had voted the UPFA to power to fulfill the promises and pledges it gave to the masses, relieving their sufferings. "The UNF leadership has planned to defeat the objectives of the new government. The JVP would not allow the
main opposition to control the parliament or to defeat the maiden budget of the UPFA government," Mr.Silva said.
