Normal life is gradually returning in the Oddusuddan region in the Mullaithivu district, an area devastated during the war that is currently under the control of the Liberation Tigers of Tamil Eelam, according to Tamil press reports from the North.
More than 3000 families from the Oddusuddan area were rendered refugees during ‘Operation Rivibala’ by the Sri Lanka Armed Forces at the end of 1998. The region was recaptured by the LTTE during its Operation Unceasing Waves 3 (‘Ooyatha Alaikal -3’) in November 1999. The displaced people who sought refuge at various places in the Vanni region are gradually returning to Oddusuddan for resettlement. Both government and Non-governmental organizations are establishing their services for the resettled people. The Oddusuddan Multi-Purpose Cooperative Union (MPCU) is currently operating 8 branches, and is also operating a rice mill to provide the essentials for the residents.
