Jaffna civil organizations to hold protest march

Jaffna District Consortium of Civil Organizations Tuesday decided to hold a protest march in Jaffna town Friday demanding the Government of Sri Lanka to restore normalcy in the lives of Tamil people and stop killing in the east and attacks on plantation Tamils, sources said.

About 150 representatives of civil organizations in Jaffna town attended a meeting held Tuesday afternoon 3 p.m. in the auditorium of the Jaffna Multi Purpose Co-operative Society to finalize the arrangement to hold the protest march on Friday It was decided at this meeting to put forward four demands. The demands follow: -

The murders of Tamil patriots in the East to be stopped.

Immediate stoppage of violence against plantation Tamils

Impediments for the resumption of normal life to be removed

Refugees in the North East should be allowed to resettle in their lands.

The protest march will commence at 10 a.m. Friday from the Nallur Kandasamy Temple premises and will reach Jaffna district secretariat through Temple Road, Racca Street and Somasuntharam Veethi. Arrangements have been made to hand over memoranda to the local heads of the Sri Lanka Monitoring Mission in Jaffna, UNHCR, International Committee of Red Cross and Human Rights Commission of Sri Lanka, sources said.

The organizers will hand over the memorandum addressed to the President Ms Chandrika Kumaratunge to the Government Agent at the Jaffna district secretariat at the end of the protest march, sources said.
