Jaffna varsity students issue deadline to settle employee's strike

The Jaffna University Students Union (JUSU) issued a deadline to the Vice Chancellor (VC) Professor C. Mohanadas to settle the strike of the varsity employees before June 28 at a discussion held Monday evening between the VC and representatives of the JUSU, sources in Jaffna said.
Members of the JUSU Monday boycotted lectures bringing all academic activities to a standstill to exert pressure on the varsity administration to find a settlement to the strike which entered eighth day, Tuesday, sources in Jaffna said. Later in the day JUSU representatives met with Professor C.Mohanadas and stressed the urgency to find an amicable solution to the demands of the employees who are on strike, sources said. JUSU representatives are reported to have told the VC that their education and other academic activities have been completely disrupted due to the ongoing strike of the employees. Jaffna university employees launched their strike on Monday 14th putting forward seven demands including the payment of salary arrears and to take immediate steps to stop corruption in the varsity administration, sources said. Meanwhile Vice Chancellor Monday around noon continued his discussion for the second day with representatives of the University Teachers Union to find ways and means to solve the strike, sources said In the meantime, University Employees Union sources Monday said it would continue its strike till the demands are met, sources said.
