Mr.Kiruparatnam Vimalethiran, 32, believed to be a Sri Lanka military intelligence informant with links to the paramilitary 'Karuna Group' was shot dead by unidentified gunmen in Mavadivembu, 22 kilometres north of Batticaloa Tuesday night. Police in the eastern town said Vimalenthiran was a petty criminal.

Mavadivembu residents who knew him said he was formerly an LTTE member and that Tigers had expelled him for misconduct many years ago. He worked as a labourer in rice mill after his expulsion from the LTTE.

They claimed that he was suspected of having a secret link with the Karuna Group. The residents alleged that he was involved in some robberies in the area. Police said there are two cases against him for theft.
