Accident victim bleeds to death

[TamilNet, Friday, 10 April 1998, 23:59 GMT]
One civilian was killed and another critically injured when the motorbike in which they were travelling crashed into another belonging to the SLA near Aavarangal on the Jaffna-Pt. Pedro Road around 6.30 p.m. yesterday said sources in Jaffna. The injured were rushed to the Atchuvely hospital and from there to the Jaffna hospital around 11 p.m. last night.

Pasupathy Sivathaasan, 24, of Naagarkovil, a 3rd year engineering student at the University of Peradeniya was pronounced dead on admission to the Jaffna hospital.

Sithamparam Ganesh, 38, of Uduppiddy who was injured is fighting for his life at the hospital said doctors.

Reports said the loss of blood which led to Sivathaasan's death was mainly due to the delay in fetching him medical assistance. The injured were eventually taken to the hospital in an SLA vehicle.

The two soldiers who were riding the other motorbike had also sustained injuries but had promptly been taken to the Palaly army hospital from Atchuvely.

The delay in getting immediate medical aid for the dead student was partly due to the reluctance on the part of civilian bystanders to provide help because of the SLA's involvement in the incident, said hospital sources in Atchuvely.
