Major General Sunil Tennekon, newly appointed Jaffna area commander of the
Sri Lanka Army, Thursday said problems confronting the people of
Jaffna district could be solved when the current peace process progresses
towards reaching a permanent solution, during a discussion at the Jaffna district
secretariat presided by Government Agent Mr.S.Pathmanathan, sources said.
Director of the Jaffna Teaching Hospital, Commissioner of Jaffna Municipal
Council and local heads of government departments attended the discussion. Major General Sunil Tennekon paid his first visit to Jaffna district
secretariat Thursday since he assumed duties in Jaffna replacing Major
General Susil Chandrapala who had been transferred to Colombo, sources said. Major General Tennekon further said that the long standing problems faced
by Jaffna residents cannot be solved
within a few days. Solutions can only be found to those problems when the
current peace process moves forward positively. ''However I would take steps to solve some problems which come within my
purview and also I am prepared to render assistance in this regard,'' said
Major General Sunil Tennekoon. Local heads of government departments also briefed him about problems
they face in discharging official duties in the Jaffna
district, sources said.
