The Vavuniya campus of the University of Jaffna will re-open from 1 September, officials said Thursday. The campus has been troubled by student unrest since June.
It was shut down on 22 July, a day after protesting students locked up non academic staff inside the only building the campus has in Vavuniya town.
Undergraduates demand that the authorities should build the campus on land allocated to the university in Pampaimadu in Vavuniya. The campus has no building of its own in Vavuniya except its office on Park Road. Students complain that their studies affected by the makeshift and disparate arrangements for teaching on the Vavuniya campus. The University authorities started construction of a students' hostel and playground in Pampaimadu last Monday.
