Mr.V.Kumaravel, a leading academician and a senior lecturer in the External Studies Unit of the Jaffna College addressing a seminar on "A review of contemporary politics" held Saturday in Sandilipay alleged that hidden hands are behind the increase of cultural degeneration in Jaffna district after the capture of the peninsula by the Sri Lanka Army (SLA).
Mr.V. Paheerathan, President of the International Thamileelam Students' Federation presided. The crime rate was less when the Jaffna peninsula was under the control of the Liberation Tigers of Tamil Eelam. Drug abuse was reported nil. Since 1996 when the peninsula was brought under the control of the SLA drug abuse has been on the increase. Dangerous drugs and blue films are freely available in Jaffna. Several incidents where distribution of blue films and drugs had taken place openly near sentry points have been reported, Mr. Kumaravel revealed. Mr. Kumaravel made the startling disclosure that during the last one-year period Jaffna teaching hospital sources had reported about 1200 girls between 12-18 had become pregnant. "Elements that were earlier engaged in killing Tamils are now appear to be involved in attacking Tamil nationalism through cultural degeneration activities. All Tamils should be alert in safeguarding the values of a centuries old culture," Mr.Kumaravel said.
