[TamilNet, Saturday, 18 April 1998, 23:59 GMT]
Gen. Anuruddha Ratwatte, Sri Lanka's Deputy Minister for Defence, visited Trincomalee this morning for a high level security conference at the Plantain Point 22-1 Brigade camp. Security was tightened in Trincomalee town today.
Informed sources said that the conference was in view of the frequent attacks by the Liberation Tigers in the Muthur recently and reports that they have infiltrated some suburbs of the Trincomalee town. Sources said that the security conference today is also significant in view of the fact that 'Eelam War III' will be three years old tomorrow (April 19). The War began on April 19, 1995 with the sinking of two Sri Lankan Navy gun boats by the Liberation Tigers in the Trincomalee harbour. The minister left Trincomalee this afternoon.
