TRO assists NE flood victims
[TamilNet, Wednesday, 10 November 2004, 17:12 GMT]
Tamil Rehabilitation Organization (TRO) has launched a project to provide dry rations and other relief supplies to flood victims in all the eight districts in the
northeast province in collaboration with the respective Government Agent
and other local non-governmental organizations, TRO said in a press release
Wednesday.
Several thousand families in the northeast districts have been affected by the recent
torrential rain. Low lying areas in several districts are under floodwater,
crops have been destroyed and several families have sought refuge in
schools and public buildings as their houses are under water, social
service officials said. TRO press release said that it is working with the
government agent of the district by providing cooked meals and supplying
good drinking water. TRO has requested all peoples' representatives and non-governmental
organisations to immediately contact its district offices in the northeast
province with detailed reports of the affected and proposed relief
measures, the press release added. Meanwhile the Jaffna district TRO officials Wednesday started supplying dry
ration relief to people affected by flood. About 150 families in
Kaakaithivu, Pommai Veli and Vasanathapuram Wednesday received relief from
TRO Jaffna officials, sources said. Several families living in low lying areas in the Jaffna district have
moved to highlands as their houses and farms are flooded with rainwater,
sources said.
