Heavy rain belts Jaffna
[TamilNet, Saturday, 04 December 2004, 16:47 GMT]
Jaffna district experienced torrential rain for the last twenty-four hours ending Saturday at 6 p.m. flooding major roads that created major traffic delays on roads linking several towns, sources in Jaffna said. 87 mm of rain was recorded during this period, meteorological sources said.
Portions of reconstruction works on the war-destroyed main bridges, Vallai,
Mulli and Navatkuli connecting Vadamaradchchi and Thenmaradchchi divisions
with mainland Jaffna town have been washed out due to the down pour and
the transport through these bridges came to a halt Saturday, sources said. Civil sources in Jaffna criticized the authorities concerned for
undertaking the reconstruction work of these bridges during rainy days. About ninety percent of the roads in the Jaffna district are with potholes, which are not attended by transport authorities for more than a decade which made matters worse with flood waters, civil sources said.
