Floods inundate Pooneryn, Pachchilaipalli villages

Torrential rain in Pachchillaipalli and Pooneryn divisions has submerged several settlements in water and severely affected life in several villages, Eelanaatham, a NorthEast Tamil daily, said quoting Kilinochchi Government Agent Mr Rasanayagam. Three hundred families living in Kachchaveli village have been surrounded by water and Pallai Pradeshya Sabha officials are organizing efforts to move the villagers to safety, the paper added.

North West coastal mapOfficials are also arranging delivery of mergency supply of food provisions and milk, according to the report.

In Naachchikuda region of Pooneryn 156 families are displaced and have sought shelter in the local schools and churches on high ground. Pooneryn Pradeshya Sabha officials are attending to the emergency needs of these families, the report added

Tamil Eelam Economic and Development Organization (TEEDOR) officials are also involved in taking emergency measures to ensure safety of families near the Akkarayan Tank which threatens to breach in some locations.

In several areas of Kilinochichi, due to inadequate drainage facilities, several commercial establishments are closed due to floods, sources from Kilinochchi said.
