Anti-War Front to organize national conference in Colombo

National Anti War Front (NAWF), an umbrella organization of thirteen trade unions is to hold a regional conference on January 22 at Anuradhapura in the north central province and a national conference in Colombo Sugathathasa Stadium on February 26 to exert pressure on the Government of Sri Lanka (GOSL) to take forward the stalled peace process, said Mr.Bertie Ranaweerage, one of the convenors of the project.

About five hundred members of all trade unions would attend the regional conference and about five thousand representatives from all over the country would attend the Colombo national conference, he said.

Mr.Ranaweerage is also the convenor of the Ceylon Teachers Union (CTU), one of the organizations of the NAWF. Mr.Ranaweerage earlier served as the General Secretary of the CTU.

Action has been taken to release a book in Sinhala language, a compilation of articles written by Tamil brethren in the northeast about their sufferings during the two-decade-old war. Articles written by Tamil brethren in their mother tongue would be translated into Sinhala. This book would be released at the national conference to be held in Colombo on February 26, Mr.Ranaweerage said.
