May day rallies in Jaffna

Numerous rallies, public meetings and processions will be held in the Jaffna peninsula to mark international workers' day on May 1, said sources in Jaffna. Trade unions active in Jaffna will hold a joint rally at the Kailasapathy Hall at the University of Jaffna in Thirunelvely. The meeting will be chaired by S.Sivapalan.
The New Democratic Party (NDP) will hold its rally at the Thirunelvely Youth Hall, presided over by K Kathirmanathan, Secretary Northern Region, NDP. The Sri Lanka Freedom Party (SLFP) is planning a procession from First Cross Street in Jaffna town, to Duriappah Stadium. The SLFP meeting will be chaired by the party's chief organiser of the Jaffna District, V.Thangavelu. The People's Liberation Organisation of Tamil Eelam (PLOTE), the Eelam People's Revolutionary Liberation Front (EPRLF) and Eelam People's Democratic Party's (EPDP) dissident Members of Parilament, N.R Ramamoorthy and N.R Ramalingam, are planning a joint rally in Gurunagar in Jaffna town. The EPDP itself is holding several meetings in Chavakachcheri, Waligamam and Wadamadtchi, said sources.
