"Courageous" renamed "Samudura"

"Courageous" naval vessel donated by the US government to Sri Lanka was renamed "Samudra" at an event held Thursday in Colombo harbour with Mr.Ratnasiri Wickremanayake, acting Defence Minister, as the chief guest. Mr.Wickremanayake, Minister of Buddhist Affairs, is holding the acting Defence Minister post in the absence of President Ms Chandrika Kumaratunge. Ms Chandrika Kumaratunge who is currently abroad.

Mr.Ratnasiri Wickremanayake is the acting head of the UPFA government following the departure of Mr.Mahinda Rajapakse, Prime Minister to Indonesia to attend the Asia-Africa Summit.

"The Government will not launch another war. It is committed to peace and is working towards this aim with a sense of responsibility," said Mr.Ratnasiri Wickremanayake at the event of renaming the US naval vessel, sources said.

"The government is prepared to face another war if thrusted on it," said Mr.Ratnasiri Wickremanayake.
