Civil groups appeal to international community to intervene
[TamilNet, Monday, 13 June 2005, 11:25 GMT]
Jaffna District Civil Groups Consortium (JDCGC), in a statement in Jaffna Monday, appealed to the international community to exert pressure on the Sri Lankan government resist chauvinistic opposition to Joint Mechanism proposal and to move forward to find a permanent political solution to the Tamil national question, sources said.
Sinhala chauvinist political groups which have been responsible for the
denial of legitimate political rights of the Tamil people since Sri Lanka
gained independence are currently engaged in opposing a structure that
could facilitate the rehabilitation and reconstruction of the tsunami
affected coastal Tamil areas in the northeast province, the statement added. If this situation continues the international community should come forward to support the Tamil liberation struggle thus recognising the right to self-determination of the Tamil people, JDCGC said in the statement.
