Massacre suspects granted bail

The Attorney General will file plaints by June 2, on the members of the police and home-guards involved in the killing of eight persons at Potkunruni near Thambalakamam on February 1 this year, said Krishanthi Mahindaratne, the prosecuting State Counsel.

He was speaking when the matter came up before P. Swarnaraj, Additional District Judge, Trincomalee, today.

Twenty one of the 42 suspects were produced in the Trincomalee Courts today. The other 21 were freed on bail, but have to be produced in court every 14 days.

State Counsel said that all suspects against whom the AG was filing charges would be produced in court on June 2.

The suspects not on bail are being held in the Anuradhapura remand prison. K.S. Ratnavel, Attorny-at-law appeared for the victims.

Meanwhile the hunger strike organised by members of the Trincomalee Urban Council (UC), in front of the UC office, is scheduled to commence at 7:00 a.m. tomorrow, led by P. Sooriyamoorthy (Tamil Eelam Liberation Organisation) and Chairman of the UC.

The hunger strike which is having the unanimous support of the Council, has been organised to protest the Northeast Provincial Council's lukewarm attitude to opening the new general market in Trincomalee.
