Peace through cricket in Trinco

Mercy Corps, an international non-governmental organization has signed an agreement with Trincomalee District Cricket Association (TDCA ) to sponsor multi-ethnic cricket tournament in the east port town with the goal of promoting peace, better mutual understanding between the ethnic groups and
to alleviate the depression and shock which continues to affect tsunami victims, sources in Trincomalee said.

Mercy Corps headquartered in USA is involved in relief
and rehabilitation work in thirty-three countries including Sri Lanka.
The main purpose of the proposed cricket tournament is to demonstrate how different ethnic communities can work together in the cosmopolitan town to achieve a common goal,

Corps and Mr.John Sowinski, Logistical Officer of the Mercy Corps in Trincomalee said at a briefing held recently.
Representatives of sports associations and media persons attended.
The tournament will be held on July 9 and 10 in Trincomalee Sri Koneswara Hindu College playground. Eight sports clubs, Wales Sc, Norman Sc, Simons Sc, Young Olympics Sc, Spence Sc, Dynamic Sc, Koneswara Hindu Sc and Zodiac
Sc are to participate in the men's 20-over tournament.
Four girls schools, St Mary's College, Methodist College, Sri Shanmuga Hindu ladies College and Sinhala Central Maha Vidiyalayam are to compete in women
tournament of 5 overs, according to Mr. Basheer Ameer, President of the Trincomalee Cricket Association who associated with his Secretary Mr.K.Ramesh said at the press briefing held at the Mercy Corps, Trincomalee office.
Trincomalee Cricket Association has agreed to arrange the grounds, umpires and other related facilities. The Mercy Corps has agreed to fund the tournament.
