Sambaltivu Boys Home gets new building

Tamil National Alliance (TNA) parliamentarians Mr.R.Sampanthan, Mr.Mavai Senathirajah and Mr.K.Thurairatnasingham, Monday, laid the foundation stones for a new building for the Boys Home in Sambaltivu in Trincomalee district administered by the Trincomalee Welfare Association (TWA), sources said. The new building and facilities costing nearly Rs 3m is being funded by a group of expatriate Canadian Tamils and will replace the existing temporary building, sources said.
The TWA has established two homes for children orphaned by wars and the recent Tsunami disaster at Mallikaitivu in Muttur division for girls and Sambaltivu in Trincomalee division for boys. Food, clothing, shelter, medical care, and education are provided to these children. The target is to provide these facilities to fifty children at each of these homes, TWA officials said. The construction work on a new permanent building for Mallikaitivu girls home at an estimated cost of three million rupees is already in progress. The TWA has appointed Action Committees for the management of these two
Homes and each Committee comprises seven members including four females. In
addition a superintendent, a cook and a watcher have been appointed for
each home. Trincomalee Welfare Association has been implementing several projects
which include maintaining homes for destitute children, providing financial
assistance to poor students selected for university, salary to volunteer
teachers in rural schools, supplying nutritious food to children,
generating self-employment opportunities and distributing relief and
rehabilitation assistance to persons who are affected by natural disasters. In addition to these the TWA provides medical assistance to the needy in
rural areas and conducts awareness campaign to keep the environment in the
villages clean and safe, sources said.
